INTRO GUIDE FOR NEWBIES

We know that when left to their own devices and free of human influence dogs pursue a fresh meat and bone diet. They are scavenging carnivores, consuming a variety of small mammals, insects, birds, frogs and they love a bit of carcass. They’re not picky in this department.

RAW DOG FOOD RECIPES

If anyone is under any illusion that dry food is anything but money making junk food then you need to sit back and have a think. Dogs absolutely need fresh food, same way we do and every other animal on the planet, and your dog’s case this means lots of fresh meat.

RAW FEEDING PUPPIES

Studies Show Major Problems With Dry Puppy Food… A study of some of the top rated dry food by vets reveals little difference between them nutritionally and cheaper supermarket brands. The authors compared 12 cereal-based puppy foods in Norway, dividing them into two types – 6 were higher-priced (HP, largely sold in vets) and 6 were lower-priced (LP, largely sold in supermarkets). Among the higher-priced brands tested were Eukanuba (large breed puppy), Proplan (puppy), Royal Canin (large breed puppy) and Hill’s (large breed puppy).

RAW FEEDING CATS

The Ideal Cat Food Is A Little Baby Bunny… Cats should not be forgotten in the whole fresh feeding conversation. On top of all the usual issues we find in a dry fed carnivore, dry fed cat’s suffer far a shocking amount of kidney and pancreatic disease than their raw fed counterparts. Clearly cereal based dry food is not working out for this little carnivore. If you’re wondering what do cats eat you simply have to look at what they’re eating when left to their own devices. We all know the answer to this. Birds. Mice. Little rabbits. They are cat food.

TREATS - MAKE YOUR OWN

As we all slowly get wiser to the toll dry feeding can take on our little carnivores, attentions naturally shift to everything else that we’re being sold by the industry. I’ve covered chemical parasite control for dogs with no parasites amply already, as we have annual boosters for already vaccinated pets and the useless kennel cough “vaccine”. Next up, natural dog treats.

THE ' TOO MUCH PROTEIN' MYTH

How Can A Dog Have Too Much Protein When They Are Protein Eating Machines?! For a human to over dose on protein they would want to be consuming a diet of pure protein (chicken breast say) with no fat or carbs – which is rare to the point of being ridiculous. In fact, a quick google search reveals the number of omnivorous humans who have had “too much protein” can be counted on one hand – it is usually body builders. Nor do we humans concern ourselves with “the right amount of protein”.

HOW MUCH RAW TO FEED

The average adult dog on an “average-calorie”, fresh meat diet will eat 2-2.5% of their body weight per day in raw dog food. Best to start with the latter figure initially, 2.5% and then drop down later if you need to.

For example, an 8kg adult Westie, might require 200g of fresh dog food per day (1% of 8kg is 80g multiplied by 2.5).

Of course every dog is different so you need to keep an eye. If your dog is a little heavy or in recovery from something or simply a bit lazy then you can either feed him a touch less or choose leaner meal options. Well-exercised? Then feed him a little more, but also increase the calorie content of the meal by including fattier cuts, (dogs burn fat for energy). Working dogs can eat 3-5% of their body weight per day, depending on what you have them doing.

IS RAW MEAT AND BONE SAFE?

It’s Natural To Wonder Is Raw Dog Food Bad For Dogs, But Know The Dry Food Industry Is Scaring You Silly… We have always been told to cook our meat. Today, in the U.K, there is a 15% chance of handling some chicken with Salmonella and, in Ireland, more than 3/10 fillets could be exposed to Campylobacter spp.. Thus if feeding chicken to human children it should definitely be cooked! It should come as no surprise so that a common concern with the move to raw dog food is “is raw meat bad for dogs?” or simply “is raw dog food safe?”. The answer is yes, absolutely, it is in fact vital.

DOES RAW DOG FOOD CAUSE AGGRESSION?

No, Raw Dog Food Does Not Cause Aggression. In Fact The Opposite Is True… People often hear that a taste of fresh meat or blood creates blood-lust aggression in dogs, when the complete opposite is the case. Eating fresh meat is proven to calm dogs (Mugford 1987), actually making them more suitable to be around young children, than dry fed dogs.

WHY DOGS NEED MEAT

Dogs Are Meat Eaters. Here’s Three Reasons Why…

1. Dogs Are Descended From A Long Line Of Meat Eaters…
The dog comes from a very long line of carnivores. He is not a wolf but he certainly descended from something like a grey wolf perhaps 30,000 years ago and wolves, all 37 species of them, are all carnivores. While some medicinal plant eating can go on, it’s a very predatory family tree.

FEEDING BONES

For Nice Teeth You Need To Cut Out The Dry Food And Feed Your Dog Raw Meaty Bones… Gum disease is a serious issue that goes far beyond unsightly teeth and smelly breath. Left to progress it can cause your dog serious discomfort and they may lose teeth. But more than that, the constant bacterial invasion at the gum line is a daily drain on your pet’s immune resources.

COST OF RAW DOG FOOD

The More Time / Effort You Are Wiling To Put In To Feeding Your Dog The Lower Your Cost Of Raw Dog Food…

There is no point in comparing the cost of raw dog food with the price of a bag of cereal-based, dry dog food as pound for pound meat is a lot more expensive than grain. That is why dry dog food companies use so little meat and so much grain!

Dogs First was established to give dog owners no-nonsense, well-researched, factual information on all things canine nutrition and natural health.

It’s clear there is today a terrible amount of bad information out there, much of it a result of the unregulated influx of corporate cash into our veterinary sector. We’ll do our best to protect you from the worst of it but for now trust absolutely nothing in a packet with a picture of a dog on it.
